Superhero Movies Poll results!
The results are in! But before we get to that, a word about the poll...
Obviously, the set-up was partially unfair. Superheros like Superman and Batman have had many film incarnations, all of varying quality, and to group them all together is not really the best way to categorize them. And It would have helped if I'd been more specific on what people liked about the movies, rather than just which selection was their favorite. Maybe a question like "Which of the following superhero movies do you think stays the closest to its comic book roots?" would have been a better question.
But hey, I asked the question I asked and we got some very interesting results so let's get to it!
- Superman- 0% Honestly not that surprising. The most recent incarnation, Superman Returns, despite the always impressive Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther, was terrible. And I feel like people don't connect to the older Superman movies like they did when they first came out.
- Ironman and Spiderman- 8% each. Also not that surprising, given how much people seemed to hate Spiderman 3 (which I personally really enjoyed.). Ironman, even with the awesome Robert Downey Jr., didn't do nearly as well as some of the other superhero flicks. Maybe it was just because Ironman himself doesn't need to have the fanbase of other big name superheros like Batman and Superman. That's just my perception though, a comic book fanatic would know better than I.
- X-men- 33% This did surprise me. After all, X-men: The Last Stand was absolutely dreadful. I don't usually leave the theatre wanting my money back, but after X-men: The Last Stand, I did. Let this be a lesson to directors- stick to what you're good at. The director of X-men and X2, Bryan Singer, left X-men 3 to direct Superman Returns. As stated before, Superman Returns and X-men 3 were terrible. Perhaps if Singer had stayed with the X-men series neither film would have been so bad, However, the other films, including X-men Origins: Wolverine, were quite good and go a long way towards redeeming the damage done by The Last Stand.
- Batman Begins/The Dark Knight- 50% This was an unfair selection on my part because many other Batman movies (like Batman Forever) were quite good. However, I couldn't resist distinguishing the two most recent and most popular Batman installments, and I'm not surprised they won. Christian Bale, no matter how crazy he may be in real life, plays a very convincing Batman/Bruce Wayne. And who doesn't still get chills from Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker? And the storylines are thrilling and complex in a way that draws you right into Gotham City.
