Oscars and Twitter and Farmville (oh my!)

Hello friends!

Glad to see many of you are voting in the poll about your favorite classic films, only a few more days to vote in that! Let me know if you have any suggestions for the next poll...

Oscar Nominations are announced in a few short days (February 2nd). This is exciting for a movie fan like me, but many people just don't seem to care about the Oscars anymore. There are still a few who will see a movie just because it won many Oscars, but the majority see a film for different reasons. I think the Oscars are great because you get to cheer on your favorite stars, but I can also see the other part of the argument (the one that says "Why does the Academy get to dictate what I like? They pass up some perfectly good films and great performances.") I'm a big fan of Meryl Streep, but I don't think she's been in anything but "Julie and Julia" and "It's Complicated" since last Oscar season, though I could be wrong. While these were sound films, particularly "It's Complicated", I don't know that either of them are Oscar worthy. Come to think of it, "Julie and Julia" may have even been last Oscar season, I don't remember. Of course the big buzz is about Avatar and Star Trek, so we'll see how those do. I'm guessing Avatar will snag a few Oscars, but you never know, and the Oscars usually don't go with who I want to win, or else Star Trek would do quite well, though I'd have to give Avatar an award for the visual components of the film, which are breathtaking.

The next item I wanted to discuss is twitter. I don't get it. Doesn't it do the same thing as blogging or facebook or instant messaging, only in a shorter and less instantaneous way and with strangers as well as friends? You write tiny blurbs about what's on your mind and people comment. What an original idea. Someone enlighten me, because I don't get it.

Speaking of facebook...any farmville addicts out there? How about fishville or cafe world? Sadly, I'm all three. I love these games and I can't really tell you why, I just do. But the one thing I DON'T understand is why anyone would pay money to boost their farmville account. For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, games like farmville have the ability to take your real money and transfer it into farmville money, thus allowing you to progress in the game faster. Why would people care that much? I love my farmville as much as the next person, but it's not getting a single cent out of my pocket. These people must have tons of money to burn...
